    1. DUI (Driving Under Influence) Consiquences

    Driving Under Influence of Alcohol is generally forbidden in Greece.
    According to the degree of alcohol intoxication the following penalties are provided for by law:
    a) Administration fine of 200€ when driving with a blood alcohol content of 0,2 gr/lt – 0,8 gr/lt measured in blood sample or 0,10 mgr – 0,40 mgr measured by alcoholmeter of exhaled breath.
    b) Removal of driver’s license for 3 months and administration fine of 700€ when driving with a blood alcohol content of 0,8 gr/lt – 1,1 gr/lt measured in blood sample or 0,40 mgr – 0,60 mgr measured by alcoholmeter of exhaled breath.
    c) Imprisonment of 2 months to 5 years, removal of driver’s license for 6 months and administration fine of 1.200€ when driving with a blood alcohol content of 1,1 gr/lt or more measured in blood sample or 0,60 mgr or more measured by alcoholmeter of exhaled breath.
    Driving Under Influence of Drugs is always a criminal offense. The law provides for penalty of imprisonment from 5 months to 5 years, removal of driver’s license for 2 – 5 years and administration fine of 1.000€ – 15.000€.
    If, when driving under influence of drugs, you cause a car accident, depending on how serious it is, you face imprisonment from 1 – 5 years for plain injury, 2 – 5 years for heavy injury and 5 – 10 years (felony) for death.

    2. Are drugs illegal in Greece?

    Drugs are illegal in Greece in all aspects. That means that use of drugs or even possession for own use is a criminal offense and can lead to arrest.
    If the possession of drugs is for your own exclusive use and/or you are a casual drug user or a proven addict, the Court can decide not to impose a penalty. Otherwise, depending on the circumstances, the crime varies from misdemeanor to felony.

    3. How old do I have to be to drive a car legally in Greece and what driving license do I need?

    16+ for motorcycle with International Driving License.
    18+ for any vehicle (car, motorcycle, ATV) with valid driving license recognized in Greece. All EU driving licenses are recognized in Greece (plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein). You don’t need license for small boats without engine and with engine up to 15hp for an inflatable boat and up to 30hp for other boat.
    Greece has adopted the European Driving License. So, if you possess a valid driving license you can drive any vehicle that corresponds to that. That is,
    – From age 16+ you can drive small motorcycle
    – From age 18+ you can drive regular motorcycle, car, ATV
    – From age 20+ you can drive heavy motorcycle
    From all other countries you need a valid International Driving License.

    4. Alcohol - Smoking

    Consume of alcohol and smoking [under Greek Law 3730/2008] is illegal under 18.
    In regards to alcohol, entrance and stay or any form of employment in clubs and bars is forbidden for persons under 18, as well as consume of alcohol in all public places, expect private events.
    Smoking is also forbidden in all closed areas. This includes restaurants, cafés, bars, shops and all public or private working areas, unless special smoking area is provided. The same applies in airports, ports, stations and all public transportation, including taxis.
    Offenders of smoking legislation face administration fines from 50-500€.

    5. What should I do if I get arrested?

    First of all you have to cooperate with the Police. You should be polite, follow the orders and give your personal details.
    You have a right to a lawyer and you have the right to remain silent. You don’t need to apologize before the Police if you don’t feel sure what to say.
    The Police if arrest you should transfer you before the DA in not more than 24 hours. After that any detention is illegal.

    6. What should I do if I have a car accident?

    If, either you or someone else, causes the accident always call the Police (100). If anyone is injured call also an Ambulance (166).
    Make sure you exchange details with the driver of any other vehicle involved, if possible. You should write down his name, surname, father’s name, ID number, driving license number, vehicle plates, type of car, color of car and details about the exact place and circumstances of the incident.
    If the other driver leaves the accident scene try to get his plate number and description of his vehicle and/or him.
    Keep details of any eye witnesses.
    Call Insurance.
    Take pictures with your mobile and/or any other suitable device.
    If there is no injury and only damages you can use the Friendly Settlement Form that must always be in your car (if rented) and the other driver may have (if Greek). See the Form in http://www.eaee.gr/cms/sites/default/files/par01.pdf. You will need someone speaking Greek, since the Form is in Greek.

    7. What should I do if I get robbed?

    You should call the Police and/or visit the nearest Police Station (you can find one at https://tourist.legal/emergency-numbers/) to denounce the incident with all available details, especially of the perpetrator, the exact place of the incident, the circumstances and description of the things/money taken and any witnesses available.

    8. What should I do if I get assaulted?

    You should call the Police and/or visit the nearest Police Station (you can find one at https://tourist.legal/emergency-numbers/) to denounce the incident with all available details, especially of the perpetrator, the exact place of the incident, the circumstances and any witnesses available.
    You should ask from the Police to be examined by a Coroner, if injured, so that all injuries are written down properly on time and officially for further criminal and civil compensation actions.

    9. What should I do if I lose my passport, ID or driving license?

    You should call the Police and/or visit the nearest Police Station (you can find one at https://tourist.legal/emergency-numbers/) to denounce the incident, so it can be written down officially that from that moment on you don’t have your ID, Passport or driving license, so you can be safe if anyone tries to use them illegally and/or for committing a crime.
    Especially for loss of passport you should also contact your country’s embassy or consulate (you can find it at https://tourist.legal/useful-links/).
    In case you also lose your cell phone and/or your wallet and/or any credit/debit card you should contact immediately your Bank or Cell Company to deactivate your credit/debit card and/or your SIM card.
